David Oistrakh (1908-1974) had few peers among violinists of his generation and continues to this day to be regarded as one of the supreme musicians of the 20th century. His playing, technically impeccable and sumptuous in tone and dramatic flair, served his interpretations eloquently. Yet there was no grandstanding in an Oistrakh performance. To one observer, he played with the quiet concentration of a chess master. In July 1990, the renowned cellist Paul Tortelier played the complete Bach Suites for the 40th anniversary of the first Festival Pablo Casals of Prades, in the beautiful Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa. Though in ailing health (he died later that same year), Tortelier undertook the performances as an homage to his mentor, Casals. Filmed by Peter Ammann, this document is, in the words of the cellist’s son, Yan Pascal Tortelier, “unique in that it sums up my father’s whole life on the cello. A thrilling look at the art of two legendary dancers. This live 1988 performance is in two parts. First, the premiere performance of Donald Saddler’s “The Rehearsal,” a thirty-minute dance piece created for Gregory and Bujones in which the two dancers reminisce about their careers and perform scenes from some of their greatest triumphs. The second half is a fully-staged performance of Act III (“The Wedding”) from Coppélia as choreographed and staged by Roni Mahler (after Arthur Saint-Leon). This
year marks the 50th anniversary of Van Cliburn’s triumph at the Tchaikovsky
Piano Competition in Moscow. Cliburn’s winning the Competition in
1958 at the height of the Cold War between the US and the USSR made
Cliburn a hero and a superstar at home. VAI is proud to announce
a series of DVDs to commemorate his victory in Moscow.
These are performances filmed in Moscow during his 1958, 1962, and
1972 visits to the Soviet capital. These broadcasts have not been seen
in the West until now.
The first two DVDs, now available, include Cliburn and the Moscow Philharmonic conducted by Kiril Kondrashin in Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, as well as encores by Chopin and Liszt (VAI DVD 4452).
Volume 2 features (VAI DVD 4453) features 1972 performances of Grieg’s Piano Concerto and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, again with Kondrashin and the Moscow Philharmonic.
Volume 3 (VAI DVD 4454), available July 31st, features Rachmaninoff’s Second and Third Piano Concertos, conducted by Kondrashin.
Anticipated future releases will include solo piano music by Beethoven, Liszt, Prokofiev, Brahms, Chopin, Scriabin and others.

This volume features live performances of Rachmaninoff’s Second and Third Piano Concertos, with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Kirill Kondrashin. The Third Concerto is the legendary performance of 1958 which occurred right after Cliburn won the gold medal. The celebrated pianist Van Cliburn achieved legendary status overnight after winning the First International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958. This landmark DVD series marks the first time that Cliburn’s performances on Russian television have been made available to the international public. Volume 4 is the first to present Cliburn in solo recital, featuring three works that figured largely in his repertoire: Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Handel, Op. 24, Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 6 in A major, Op. 82, and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36 (the original 1913 version).
